How Travel Insurance and Other Tools Can Protect You from Today’s Risks

In the current political climate, are there ways to protect your financial investment in a future trip, and to guard against unexpected injuries, compromised safety, or other travel risks? During WOW Week 2026, Stan Sandberg from TravelInsurance.com and Sheri Howell from Medjet answered these and many other questions. Watch the video below (recorded on January 30, 2026) to hear their advice.

Here’s one tip that our live audience learned: Given the constantly shifting geopolitical landscape, it’s important to know that most travel insurance will not cover trip cancellation due to acts of war. But some plans do cover cancellation because of civil unrest, riots, and certain changes in the U.S. State Department’s advisory level for your destination.

A policy with a Cancel For Any Reason upgrade will give you the broadest coverage, but with the highest premiums.

Watch the video for lots more useful advice!

Europe: Secret Spots and Smart Strategies for 2026

Which places in Europe are having such an interesting moment right now that they should not be missed in 2026?  What under-the-radar treasures should you include on your itinerary? And what strategies are best for avoiding tourist crowds and lines? Europe experts on The WOW List joined us during WOW Week 2026 to answer these questions and many more. You can view our conversation below (recorded on January 27, 2026).

Watch the video for dozens of places to consider for 2026. Just a few:

  • Lapland, Norway: The northern lights are near their peak right now, as they’re correlated to the sun’s 11-year activity cycle. Norway specialist Torunn Tronsvang recommends specific areas near the Arctic Circle as optimal viewing spots.
  • Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, post-Olympics: Italy specialists Maria Landers and Brian Dore point out how certain Italian cities benefitted greatly from infrastructure improvements made for the 2025 Jubilee Year; that means they’re gleaming now, yet without last year’s wave of visitors. And the spiffing up of the Cortina region for the 2026 Winter Olympics will translate to great experiences and value there after February.
  • The British Museum, London: Starting in September, the British Museum will host the 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry, a 230-foot-long masterpiece depicting the Norman Conquest, notes England expert Karen Gee. It will be on loan from Normandy through July 2027.
  • Burgundy, France: The Burgundy wine region has long been lovely but fairly unchanging, says France expert Phillip Haslett. This year, though, it’s gaining new luxury hotels in renovated chateaux and vineyard estates.
  • Belgrade, Serbia, and Sarajevo, Bosnia: These ancient cities are full of history, museums, and charm, but they’re often overshadowed by Croatia, says Eastern Europe specialist Greg Tepper. Now, there’s a new level of comfort, thanks to recent investment, luxurious new hotels, and wonderful restaurants.
  • Bruges, Belgium: It’s always been on the map for its charming waterways and ancient art. But now there’s a new contemporary arts center that Belgium expert Tom Stinglhamber says is bringing an exciting modernity and restaurant energy to the city.
  • Jerez de la Frontera, Spain: It’s particularly appealing now, says Spain expert Ivan Ricoy, as it’s been designated the 2026 Spanish capital of gastronomy—this year’s national epicenter of food- and wine-centric events.

Easy Escapes in the Americas in 2026

Where can you get away from it all—relatively quickly and jet-lag-free?  WOW List experts across the Americas share their favorite escapes—dreamy islands, pristine beaches, nature hideaways, wildlife sanctuaries, small-ship cruises—in this Travel Talk, recorded on January 28, 2026 as part of WOW Week 2026. They also share how infrastructure improvements and conservation-driven tourism continue to evolve and create new pockets of opportunity for smart travelers.

Watch the video for the experts’ recommendations for 2026. These include:

South Caicos, Turks and Caicos: The island of South Caicos is a prime example of careful development, says Caribbean expert Meg Austin. It’s been made more easily accessible, thanks to nonstop flights from Miami twice weekly, but the island’s popularity is kept in check by limited hotel inventory.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota: One of the country’s lesser-known national parks, American West specialist Melissa Ladvala recommends this Badlands wilderness that delivers dramatic buttes, red-rocks scenery, and wide-open solitude. The crowds here are bison, wild horses, and prairie dogs.

The Baja Peninsula, Mexico: Right now, says Mexico expert Zach Rabinor, the wine country in northern Baja is akin to the early years of Napa and Sonoma: a rustic atmosphere with a Mediterranean climate.

Boca Chica, Panama: This Pacific coastal region is just a one-hour flight from Panama City but not yet well known internationally, according to Panama expert Pierre Gedeon. It’s locally appreciated for island-hopping and kayaking among dolphins in the mangroves.

Tinajani, Peru: The Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu are the country’s best-known sights. But few travelers get to the southern canyonlands, says Peru expert Allie Almario. That may soon change, now that a remote former sheep farm has been turned into a tented luxury resort with private hot tub terraces.

The Southern Amazon, Brazil: For all the buzz about the Amazon, few actually visit the most southerly stretch of the region, says Brazil expert Paul Irvine. He reports that the luxury eco-resort Cristalino Lodge is continually enhancing its wildlife viewing and river-access facilities.

The Canadian Arctic: The rich wildlife and spectacular scenery of Nunavut, Canada, is a great way to escape the summer heat, says Arctic and small-ship-cruise specialist Ashton Palmer. Small-ship expeditions offer agile access to the changing glacial landscape.

Northern Lights in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada.

Where to Travel in 2026

Savvy travelers often ask us to point them toward the best under-the-radar or up-and-coming locales around the globe. So we made that spirit of discovery the cornerstone of our kickoff day of WOW Week 2026. Watch our Travel Talk on “Where to Go and What to Know For 2026” below (recorded on January 26, 2026).

Now is the best time in the next decade to see the northern lights. Here’s why and where. Learn more in our video.

A few highlights from our Travel Talk:

These are the most popular countries for WOW trips already booked for 2026:

  1. Italy
  2. Japan
  3. New Zealand
  4. France
  5. The United Kingdom

For the top 15, see Where Everybody’s Traveling in 2026.

By contrast, these are a few of the lesser-known spots we’re watching around the globe:

Under-the-radar spots to experience before they’re “discovered”:

  • Portugal’s Alentejo countryside: Explore medieval villages and castles where it feels like time has stood still.
  • The Greek island of Paros: It has a laid-back sophistication that makes for a quieter stay than Mykonos or Santorini, but it still has quaint fishing villages, stylish restaurants, and bustling nightlife.
  • Slovenia: In its scenery, architecture, and cuisine, this jewel of Central Europe is like a mix of Italy and Austria. From the lively university town of Ljubliana to picture-perfect Lake Bled, it’s got plenty of green nature and historic charm, yet relatively few tourists.
  • Transylvania, Romania: In the Transylvanian countryside, farmers, artisans, craftspeople, blacksmiths, cheese makers, bread bakers, and other shopkeepers ply their trades the same way they have for centuries. Learn why King Charles III of England owns homes here.
  • Uruguay: It’s popular among in-the-know South Americans, and here’s why U.S. travelers are enamored too.
  • Sri Lanka: It’s peaceful and enchanting, with warm, welcoming people, charming small hotels, lush landscapes, and vibrant fusion cuisine. Read reviews.

Up-and-coming places to see before they change too much:

  • Malta and Sardinia: These Mediterranean islands are seeing a rapid rise in tourism.  And for the first time, both will be accessible via nonstop flights from New York starting this spring. Get there before everyone else. And if you’ve got time for only one, choose Malta.
  • Panama’s Chiriqui province: A few hours’ drive southwest of Panama City along the Pacific, Chiriqui has emerged over the past decade as an unspoiled escape with environmentally focused boutique hotels. On the Caribbean side, a Viceroy hotel is expected to open later this year (with 42 overwater villas) in the Bocas del Toro archipelago.
  • Melides, Portugal: Melides is not as well known as the Algarve farther south, but its tranquil natural dunes and beaches are now drawing major hotel projects. Na Praia resort is opening this spring between the ocean and a wild nature reserve just north of Comporta.
  • The Red Sea coast, Saudi Arabia: A significant leisure development is transforming the Red Sea coast, with the Four Seasons AMAALA at Triple Bay scheduled to debut this year and others opening over the next few years.

TRAVELERS JUST BACK

Read on for a taste of how the WOW List experts who will share intel and advice in our Travel Talks can transform your vacations: Jennifer Cheng’s seven-night family trip to Norway is a winter example of secret spots and smart strategies in Europe. Ana Craig’s 50th birthday celebration in Panama shows what an easy escape in the Americas looks like. And Cate Bradley’s Sri Lanka adventure highlights one of the places to go in 2026.

JUST BACK FROM NORWAY

Secret spots and smart strategies in Europe

Jennifer Cheng and family display their ice sculptures at Sorrisniva, Norway.

Traveler Jennifer Cheng and family display their ice sculpting artistry at Sorrisniva.

“We were looking for a winter break trip for our family of five: mom, dad, 19-year old son, 16-year old daughter, and 13-year-old daughter. My husband’s dream for over ten years has been to stay at an ice hotel, and I always wanted to experience the northern lights.

Torunn planned an impeccable trip for us. We got a taste of so much of Arctic Norway in a short amount of time, with glimpses of the northern lights almost every night we were in Alta.

Our Arctic journey started with our flight to Alta from Oslo. We drove straight to Sorrisniva Arctic Wilderness Lodge. My husband and kids spent their once-in-a-lifetime night in the igloo hotel, in an ice room on an ice bed! I, on the other hand, was very happy to be in the very lovely and warm river room.

Our time in Alta was filled with one great experience after another: ice sculpting, drinks at the ice bar, reindeer sledding, learning about the Sámi, after-dinner aurora walks, frozen river snowshoeing, jacuzzi, sauna, husky sledding, New Year’s fireworks from the top of a mountain, snowboarding, whale watching, and snowmobiling. Reflecting on it, I can’t believe how much we fit into our five nights in Alta.

After Sorrisniva, we loved our stays at ONGA and Bjørnfjell. On our way to ONGA, the road was closed due to previous rains, so the amazing Andrei drove us and our luggage by snowmobile over three roundtrips. At ONGA, our rooms had access to a private jacuzzi, sauna, and aurora dome. And we had our WOW Moment: a family photo shoot in the snowy, picture-perfect surroundings. We had so much fun with the talented Danil, who captured some priceless moments that we will truly treasure.

I would not plan another complex trip without the help of Wendy Perrin’s collection of travel planners. It’s such a luxury to be able to just go and immerse yourself and enjoy. Norway in winter is a truly magical place, like living in a postcard. My only regret is that we did not stay longer!” —Jennifer Cheng

JUST BACK FROM PANAMA

An easy escape in the Americas

“Our trip to Panama was truly exceptional, and we could not be happier with our choice of destination, timing, or Pierre as our trip planner. We gave him a short four-week planning window for one of the busiest travel weeks of the year—the week between Christmas and New Year’s—and he absolutely delivered. Even when we weren’t able to secure all the nights we wanted at the resort, Pierre proactively created an alternate plan that ended up being a highlight of the trip.

Private transportation from start to finish made the trip seamless and stress-free. The complimentary ATV excursion on our first full day was an absolute blast and a perfect way to kick things off. Visiting the Panama Canal paired with a walk through Casco Viejo was a fantastic cultural experience.

The most unique experience was celebrating my 50th birthday on a private catamaran. From the incredible food to the warm, attentive staff, it felt both intimate and special. It was the kind of experience that felt luxurious but still deeply personal, and one we’ll talk about for years.

Another unexpectedly meaningful moment was Pierre surprising us with an in-person visit near the end of the trip, along with Panamanian coffee, chocolate, and rum. That level of personal touch is rare and made us feel genuinely cared for. He and his team added immense value at every stage of the trip. Beyond crafting a thoughtful itinerary, they anticipated potential challenges and had solutions ready.

This was the first time our family has traveled this way, and the experience exceeded every expectation. We’re already planning our next trip with him for next year, which might be the strongest endorsement we can give.” —Ana Craig

JUST BACK FROM SRI LANKA

A “very special place” to consider for 2026

Train ride through tea plantation and between treen in Sri Lanka.

In Sri Lanka you can hike (or take the train) through rolling tea plantations. Photo: Sri Lanka in Style

Miguel and Nicola planned a truly wonderful two weeks for our family in Sri Lanka—our 11th Wendy Perrin trip. We spent four terrific days exploring the Cultural Triangle and then headed down to Kandy for three days in that fascinating area. We also spent several days hiking in the mountains of tea country and finally ended with five nights relaxing on the southern coast in a beautiful, fully staffed villa.

Throughout, Miguel heeded our call for a vacation focused on walking, nature and beautiful places. We hiked two sections of the Pekoe Trail that Miguel created—a 180-mile path that traverses the middle of Sri Lanka—which we highly recommend. The trail weaves through some of the most spectacular scenery in the country and is completely unspoiled. Miguel came with us for one full-day hike, and it was a real highlight of our trip.

Other highlights included a spectacular morning in the Royal Botanic Gardens with the professor who trains all of Sri Lanka’s tour guides on trees and plants, and an introduction to the monkeys of Polonnaruwa with a researcher from the Smithsonian Primate Research Station.

We also enjoyed our WOW Moment, a sunrise hike to the top of a beautiful rock in the Cultural Triangle, followed by a floating breakfast on a boat in a lovely lake, surrounded by birds and flowers.

We can’t thank Miguel and Nicola enough for these memorable days in a very special place.” —Cate Bradley
