Are you dreaming about your next big escape and wondering how to make it affordable? The U.S. dollar has slid 11 percent against many of the world’s currencies this year, so it’s a good time to focus on countries where your dollar will stretch farthest.
Countries that are relatively expensive for travelers now include Denmark, France, Iceland, Japan, Korea, the Maldives, Norway, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and certain Caribbean islands. You can stretch your dollar farther by choosing countries where travel costs significantly less.
Relatively affordable European countries include Portugal, Turkey, and most of Eastern Europe, from Poland and the Baltic States down to the Balkans. Also economical are almost all of the countries of Asia, Central America (think Belize, Costa Rica, Panama), and much of South America (think Colombia, Ecuador, Peru).

PORTUGAL: “We thought the trip pricing was most cost-effective, compared to other trips we have taken…”

WOW List traveler Marci Shapiro on a private yacht in the Algarve. Photo: Traveler Andy Shapiro
“Our adventure began in the Algarve at a beautiful and relaxing resort overlooking the dramatic and spectacular cliffs along the Atlantic Ocean. Highlights included long beautiful hikes with a guide and a private sunset cruise. Somehow the planners arranged for a significant upgrade on the yacht we chartered, which was a welcome surprise and treat!
Next was three nights in Porto at a fabulous luxury hotel fronting the Douro River with incredible views. The private tours and tastings we had at Taylor Fladgate, Graham’s, and Quinta do Noval were mind-boggling! Seeing huge crowds of people, and then being whisked away for the ‘private experience’ that only experts can arrange, is always a pleasure. Last, but certainly not least, was the private yacht cruise down the Douro River through the Douro Valley Wine Region! What FUN!
Our final stop was Lisbon. We stayed at a former palace that was converted to a luxury five-star hotel with what we thought was the absolute best location. Our guide in Lisbon just prior to us had taken around the former Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau; before that was Magic Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson with their wives. My wife and I could not believe he was our guide too! Additional Lisbon-area highlights included two winery visits, a Fado show, the University of Coimbra and its Biblioteca Joanina, and dinner at the Chef’s table of a two-star Michelin restaurant!
We thought the trip pricing was extremely fair and reasonable and most cost-effective, compared to other trips we have taken. We will forever be so grateful and appreciative for everything the planners did on our behalf! OBRIGADO!” —Andy and Marci Shapiro

SPAIN: “His connections and relationships actually resulted in some discounts…”

Toledo is easily reached via day trip from Madrid and can be surprisingly affordable. Photo: Shutterstock
“We were hesitant to use a planner for our trip to Spain because we were leery of the cost. After our initial Zoom meeting with Pablo, we felt reassured by his connections and relationships with local businesses, which in turn actually resulted in some discounts.
There is no way we could have come close to duplicating the same experience, simply from lack of knowledge. I can’t imagine the time we would have needed to invest researching and probably would still not have come close.
The itinerary was very clear about what steps to follow. Private car services were so convenient and, although we probably could have managed taking taxis and the subway, there was zero stress involved. One of our favorite things was a paella-making class with Chef Josh, also our day trips to Toledo. There wasn’t a single activity that I would not recommend or would have removed from our itinerary. Pablo’s expertise was highly appreciated.” —Erica Cornett

CROATIA & SLOVENIA: “There is no way, had we attempted to plan this trip on our own, that we would have had 1/100th the enjoyment…”

WOW List traveler Sheila Morse and her husband on the island of Korcula, off Croatia’s coast.
“There is no way, had we attempted to plan this trip on our own, that we would have had 1/100th of the enjoyment of the amazing three weeks in Croatia and Slovenia that was provided under the care of Jay’s team. We appreciated early-morning and later-evening starts to avoid the intense mid-day heat. After a few old city/town centers I thought perhaps we had seen enough. But in fact, each was different and each guide’s focuses were different.
We had one intentional WOW event and one unplanned! We were escorted through the old town of Dubrovnik to Local. Marija, Zlatko, and their children were so very gracious and welcoming. As we were enjoying our welcome drink, a pomegranate liquor, Marija explained how their business came about and evolved over the past years, from two places for gelato in the old city to a review in the Wall Street Journal, to becoming friends with the reviewer, to sourcing local produce and hosting guests in their homes to opening the new place in the old city just one month prior to our visit. Periodically we stopped all discussion to focus on the exquisite taste experience—the most amazing tomatoes, fresh cheese, and prosciutto, as Zlatko explained how it was made and the ways it is different from other countries’ more mass-production processes.
The second AMAZING experience took place on our very last night in Croatia. Tea took us to her and Kristo’s olive groves for the best of several olive oil tasting experiences we had throughout our itinerary. We sat at a long table in the dusk and later under the stars, the quarter moon, and the Milky Way pairing olive oil with orange, chocolate, and tomatoes, enjoying food treat after food treat and Tea’s homemade breads, drinking good wines, and just talking with our hosts and the other participants. The tasting was to end at 9 pm. Long after 10, Kristo and Tea drove all of us to the top of Srd peak to view Old Dubrovnik lit up far below.” —Sheila Morse

ESTONIA, LATVIA, LITHUANIA & POLAND: “There were no heavy crowds, the locals were friendly, and this part of Europe is very reasonable, too…”

Lithuania is a welcome respite from Europe’s high prices. Photo: Shutterstock
“I recently returned from a wonderful trip to the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) and Poland. A unique element of Jay’s company is that the traveler can choose their desired level of support while in country—from being mostly independent to a full-service approach, complete with full-time guides, drivers, etc. I chose to be mostly independent. I had a walking tour in each city when I arrived, which was really helpful and fun. I also chose a couple of day trips out of the city and the team arranged those as well. Otherwise, I was on my own, although they checked in periodically to make sure things were going well or to advise me of any logistical changes.
I could linger in a restaurant over a particularly tasty meal, spend a half day at the Royal Wawel castle vs. just seeing the highlights, or visit the incredible St. Mary’s Basilica twice in Kraków, and explore some beautiful off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods in Vilnius to get a glimpse of everyday life in the city.
I heartily recommend this part of Europe—each country was so beautiful and distinct, with a fascinating history and so much to see and experience. There were no heavy crowds, the locals were all friendly and eager to help or just have a conversation, and this part of Europe is very reasonable, too.” —Sally Lee

ALBANIA, NORTH MACEDONIA, AND KOSOVO: “Everywhere we went, we were embraced by the locals…”

“This part of the world is not frequently traveled by tourists, especially Americans. But everywhere we went, we were embraced by the locals. Jay and his team did a terrific job of managing the itinerary in locations where tourist infrastructure is not up to par with most other European countries. The guides were the best available—friendly, knowledgeable, and flexible.
We had an unexpected issue with noise at one hotel (that had assured us previously of quiet), and Jay’s representative quickly responded to our anxious plea—on a Sunday morning—and immediately found us a fantastic option that was perfect for us. The trip was fascinating, fun, eye-opening, and enlightening. The team made it all possible.” —Karen Mason

TURKEY: “We felt very taken care of and learned so much about Turkey’s incredible history…”

Travelers Emmie and Eric Lee and Victor Hwang hiked in Cappadocia.
“We (my husband, my brother and myself) enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime 12-day trip to Turkey this spring. We enjoyed working with Karen and her helpful, responsive staff who are based in Istanbul—they helped us craft our itinerary, were mindful of weather/conditions and amazing at pivoting when we needed to, and were very responsive/thoughtful re. our entire trip. We felt very taken care of, enjoyed the extremely knowledgeable guides, and learned so much about Turkey’s incredible history.
We loved our experiences of walking through (and on top of!) the Grand Bazaar, touring the incredible Sophia Hagia, Blue Mosque and others, indulged and were pampered at the hammam that Karen recommended we try. We enjoyed shopping at the bazaars (treated ourselves to a gorgeous carpet, ceramics, scarves, jewelry, spices and nuts!) and were ‘wowed’ by being picked up for our private Bosphorus cruise and meal at a very James Bond restaurant.
A highlight meal was Asma Yapgragi in Alacati—wishing we could return and I could take one of their cooking workshops on their incredibly charming, magical property, along with enjoying their amazing food!” —Emmie Lee

BELIZE: “Belize is still a bit under the radar, but we’ve enjoyed it as much as Costa Rica, the Virgin Islands, Mexico…”

Belize’s Caribbean coast is dotted with tiny cayes and affordable resorts. Photo: Timothy Baker
“Our family of four (two parents, two college-aged daughters) had a second fantastic trip to Belize, courtesy of Patricia. She crafted a trip that mixed adventure and relaxation. We stayed at the beachside resort of Naïa in a three-bedroom villa. It was beautiful and large, and we especially loved the private and secluded feeling on the beach and the outdoor showers in our villa. Our older daughter had recently gotten SCUBA certified, so we planned two days for her and my husband to dive, while my younger daughter and I snorkeled.
We did a full-day private catamaran sail to Moho Caye that was AMAZING. Due to it being off-season, we had almost the whole caye to ourselves for swimming and snorkeling. Several rays and nurse sharks literally swam up within two to three feet of the shore.
Our WOW Moment was fantastic. The head chef of Naïa came to our villa to prepare a private dinner just for us, and a local cultural drumming group came and did an interactive performance, and let us try our hands at drumming as well. It was a truly memorable evening.
On both visits, we’ve found so much to love about Belize. It’s relatively inexpensive, in terms of food and excursions. The people are amazingly friendly, and we’ve always felt very safe. Outside of Belize City, there is very little crime, and a noticeable absence of the poverty and homelessness you see in many Caribbean nations. And, despite its small size, it has such varied landscapes and experiences, from rainforests and jungles to islands and beaches. We’re already thinking about going back to visit one of the wild cat reserves where we might see jaguars and other large cats. I think Belize is still a bit under the radar, but we’ve enjoyed it every bit as much as Costa Rica, the Virgin Islands, Mexico, etc.” —Jason, Jennifer, Madeleine and Addison Rosenberg

COSTA RICA: “All of us agreed this was one of the best trips the family ever had…”

WOW List traveler Anna Kuo and her group enjoying a “thoughtful surprise” from our recommended local fixer.
“Irene planned an eight-day, adventure-filled vacation for our group of nine adults. We knew we wanted to whitewater raft on the Pacuare River, followed by a few days on the beach. When we arrived at the river we were greeted by guides who handed us helmets decorated with balloons—even the rafts were decorated with balloons! We were celebrating a couple of birthdays and a retirement, and it was such a thoughtful surprise.
We rafted on Class II-III rapids for about 90 minutes and arrived at the incredible Pacuare Lodge, where we stayed for two nights. We signed up to do zip lining and rapelling, which we originally thought would be a bit tame but ended up being another highlight. The guides took our safety seriously but also made it really fun to step off a platform 30 feet in the air!
To depart the lodge we had to raft out, and that particular leg had some Class III-IV rapids. There is a section of the river where the water is calm and flows between a high-walled canyon—we were allowed to jump out and float downstream in this magical place. After enjoying lunch riverside, we rafted to the take-out for our chartered flight to Manuel Antonio National Park.
We stayed three nights at the incredible Arenas Del Mar resort. We were immediately greeted by iguanas, sloths and monkeys. The beach was beautiful, as well as the pool overlooking the ocean. The guys spent one day fishing sailfish and also came back with a mahi-mahi that the chef served as ceviche. On our last night Irene arranged for our group to have a cocktail making lesson, followed by a ceviche making lesson, followed by a Latin dance lesson, all on the beach!
All of us agreed this was one of the best trips the family ever had, and we are grateful to Irene for helping us create many lasting memories.” —Anna Kuo

PANAMA: “Pierre put together a trip very quickly for us, immediately understanding what we were looking for, within our budget…”

WOW trip planner Pierre, a Panama specialist, arranged for “the best visibility of the Panama Canal.” Photo: Shutterstock
“Pierre put together a spring break trip very quickly for us, immediately understanding what we were looking for, within our budget, and with only about 7 weeks before our travel dates. He and his team found a gorgeous small boutique hotel in the heart of Old Town Panama City, a working coffee farm high in the mountains with hiking among waterfalls and in the cloud forest, and a rustic off-the-grid small beach resort in Bocas. The guides and drivers Pierre/team found were fantastic: they adjusted schedules on the fly to get the best visibility of the Panama Canal and to optimize our time with the wild monkeys well away from the crowded tourist boats—a huge hit with our 9 year old kiddo!
We were particularly impressed when one driver was able to quickly re-organize a complicated drive/boat transfer mid-route when one of our party was unexpectedly ill, seamlessly shifting logistics to better fit the immediate need. But most impressive was Pierre’s response when one of the hotels had an issue—he responded within 45 minutes with an alternate solution, advocated for us with the hotel itself, and continued to stay in touch and make sure everything was resolved. We were very impressed with his professionalism and his quick response!!” —Kat Sanders

PERU: “We knew that we didn’t want to spend the fortune that it costs to stay in Aguas Calientes overnight and deal with the crazy crowds there…”

Travelers Sara and Drew found the key to crowd-free Machu Picchu was the early train to the one-day Inca Trail.
“We just returned from one week in Peru planned by Mariana. What an incredible country! It was truly a grand adventure and I’m so happy with how it turned out.
We emphasized repeatedly to Mariana that we wanted beautiful, off-the-beaten-path hikes where we were unlikely to encounter other hikers. Mariana absolutely delivered. On our first day, we drove 45 minutes up a long dirt road to 14,000 feet and hiked to Huchuy Qosqo. Let me tell you, running into nobody but an 80-year old woman farming in flip flops with her alpaca like she has been there her entire life is a mind-blowing thing. We loved seeing how native Peruvians maintain their traditional way of life.
Our favorite day of the trip was Machu Picchu. To those who are physically fit and like a challenge, I definitely recommend doing the one-day Inca Trail to hike into Machu Picchu. We knew that we didn’t want to spend the fortune that it costs to stay in Aguas Calientes overnight and deal with the crazy crowds there. Instead, we stayed in Las Qolqas Eco Resort in Ollantaytambo and took the earliest train to KM104 for the one-day Inca Trail. Mariana definitely knew that there wouldn’t be any other hikers starting that early. Our guide, Christian, was fantastic, and we arrived to the Winay Wayna site in record time. We were so lucky to have it (and the Inca trail) completely to ourselves the entire time. We did not see another soul (except a few porters) until we arrived at the Sun Gate. Truly spectacular and unexpected—the early bird catches the worm!
Seeing this glorious site with absolutely no other people in it was such a rare experience. And something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Everyone should see Machu Picchu once in their life if they can. It’s truly a site that commands your attention. You can’t peel your eyes away.
We also took a long adventure to Ausangate Seven Lakes Hike. While there were a few more people there, it was never a problem. This hike is extremely remote and high elevation, and hands down the best mountain scenery I’ve ever experienced in my life. Colorado hardly rivals these majestic snow-covered mountains, surrounded by craggy rocks and turquoise lakes.
The food in Peru was outstanding. We loved trying the fruit juice and churros in San Pedro market in Cusco, and the Japanese Peruvian fusion was exceptional. Our favorite restaurant in Peru was Alqa in Ollantaytambo, where we enjoyed standout trout ceviche and an extraordinarily unique and historic atmosphere that felt like stepping back in time.
There is so much more to see in Peru. We only had a week, but we’d love to return to see Huaraz and Cordillera Blanca, Arequipa and the Colca Canyon, and the Amazon rainforest. Mariana will take excellent care of you, should you visit Peru.” —Sara Grace Tomlinson

“We traveled to Colombia for 12 days in early March, arranged by Boris. We understand some people are reluctant to travel there, but there should be no hesitation: It’s a beautiful country filled with lots to do, wonderful people, fabulous food—and completely safe!
We started in Bogota, then went to the coffee region, Cartagena and Medellín. Hotels were luxurious with excellent service. In each location we had a guide and driver. The quality of the guides was superb—and that’s what really made the trip extra special. We had many fun excursions—food tours, cooking class, coffee and cacao plantations, art gallery tour, bamboo rafting—just to name a few. And our WOW Moment luncheon at the home of a local farmer/landowner was a special highlight. We can’t recommend Colombia and Boris enough—you will not be disappointed!” —Carol Cozen

ARGENTINA: “We wanted to experience ‘the real Argentina’ through food, art, people, and nature…”

“To see the glaciers up close was an incredible experience!”
“We have just returned from a wonderful two-week birthday trip to Argentina planned by Maita and Malena. We told Maita we wanted to experience ‘the real Argentina’ through food, art, people, and nature. She listened and then planned an exceptional trip that exceed our expectations.
The tone of our trip was set the minute we landed, as we were lucky to see the Jacarandas trees in full bloom. This natural beauty was repeated throughout our adventures in Buenos Aries, Lujan de Cuyo Valley and Uco Valley in Mendoza, and finally Calafate. To see the glaciers up close was an incredible experience. Maita and Malena created many unforgettable moments for this special trip which included birthday wishes at every restaurant and resort. We also enjoyed a variety of restaurants that showed us the many layers of Argentina. Each restaurant was better than the last. One of our favorite dining experiences was at the Asado, where all the food was cooked by women chefs!
We were also grateful for Maita and Malena’s suggestions where to stay in each location. We loved the seclusion of Eolo and the beauty of Cavas Wine Lodge. Cavas quickly became our favorite resort as we sat on our terrace looking at the sunset sipping wine! Also, the special birthday dinner on our terrace at Cavas with a fire, the sunset, and a sampling of the foods and wines of Argentina will be a memory to last a long time!
Highlights of our trip included meeting two very talented artists: visual artist Sergio Roggerone and his lovely wife Marina and silversmith Juan Carlos Pallarols. Each of these artists were generous with their time. We enjoyed talking with them, learning about their art, and sharing common experiences. We also enjoyed our visit to the Monastery of the Preaching Christ and spending time with Father Diego and his dog! And of course what would a trip to Argentina be without a little (or in our case a lot) of wine tastings. We most enjoyed wine tasting when it was paired with delicious lunches at Lagarde Winery, Zuccardi Piedra Infinita Winery and our WOW Moment of a gourmet picnic lunch on the grounds of another beautiful winery. We look forward to sharing our wine purchases with friends and family back home!” —Peggy Murphy

VIETNAM: “Vietnam is the land of opportunity today…”

Locals cast a fishing net in Vietnam. Photo: Traveler Robyn Needham
“Vietnam is the land of opportunity today and a place we highly recommend you visit. We spent 17 days exploring from the North to the South on a trip planned by Ethan and Sandy. The Vietnamese people are welcoming, friendly and fantastic to be around. We quickly learned that Vietnamese culture is centered around family, and families come together every day to share the fantastic Vietnamese food.
We began our journey in Hanoi. We toured the bustling city, from the historic Hanoi Hilton (where American POWs were kept during the war) to the food-market streets. We traveled to Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and spent two nights on a four-cabin ship sailing amazing areas. Highlights of our experience were hiking to caves in this limestone cliff region, kayaking through a fishing village where houses are on the water, and kayaking to a secluded bay to swim without any crowds.
In Huế, we had unique opportunities to visit two family homes. The first was the home of a professional calligrapher, and we all participated in practicing calligraphy. In the second home we practiced Vietnamese as we enjoyed an amazing meal and homemade rice wine (don’t think sake but, rather, more like vodka).
We were then off to Hội An and Da Nang. We toured the rivers, took a ride on a ’round boat’ that fishermen still use and that can rotate at such a rate that I am still dizzy thinking about it—such fun. We also visited a fishing village and raised the fishing nets and threw casting nets to truly experience their daily lives.
In Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), highlights included two boat trips up and down the Saigon River—to the Củ Chi Tunnels, which are preserved Viet Cong tunnels, and to the Mekong Delta area where we rode bikes to a temple and shared rice wine at the home of a local producer.
It was in the 90s each day and humid, but the guides were very attentive to hydrating us and cooling us down at needed intervals. Our primary goal in travel is to meet locals, learn their culture, values and experience a little of how they live. We accomplished that in Vietnam and are forever changed for the positive from this amazing trip.” —Robyn and Dan Needham

“I have just returned from a wonderful trip to Uzbekistan focused on Silk Road history and culture. Zulya and her staff provided an excellent experience. The local people were extremely friendly. I felt extremely safe throughout the entire trip, even walking around at night.
The country has a wealth of amazing sites, without the crowds and the expense of Europe. Everything was very clean, from my hotel rooms to historical sites, mosques, and cities.
One of the highlights was having lunch with Zulya’s multigenerational family. I adore them all, especially her mother, who is in her 80s. She said that she has adopted me as her fifth son!” —Chris Ng

INDIA: “They put together a fabulous itinerary that met my core objectives…”

When business sent traveler Bert Smyers to India, he made the most of his time there.
“I decided in mid-February that I needed to make a trip to India in mid-March for business. I had never been to India before, and wasn’t sure if I’d ever make it back, so I wanted to add a few personal days to see and experience the region around Delhi. Wendy’s team connected me with Victoria and Diggy. In short order, they put together a fabulous itinerary that met my core objectives. My guide, Harsh, and I set off on an adventure that hit the ‘must-see’ spots (the Taj Mahal, the Jaipur City Palace, Amber Fort, Red Fort, and many others) and lots of wonderful and unique extras, such as jewelry-making, other handmade arts & crafts, trips to a few local markets, and even an afternoon with rescued Asian elephants.
The choices of lodging and dining were top-notch as well. During the trip, Harsh shared much of his knowledge of Indian history and culture, for which I was very grateful. I ended the trip quite satisfied and ready to return to experience more of this fascinating country.” —Bert Smyers

SRI LANKA: “We will carry the warmth of the Sri Lankan people with us for a long time…”

“We had a wonderful time in Sri Lanka. We were so happy to have booked with Miguel, as it became obvious almost instantly that he has built relationships with the best guides in many destinations. At Sigiriya, our guide had grown up just a short distance away and his father worked as an archeologist at the site. In Kandy, our guide seemingly knew every vendor in the markets and shared his love of his hometown with us. In Galle Fort, only ~800 people live inside the Fort and our guide was one of them—his family going back multiple generations in the same house.
Our number-one reason for choosing Sri Lanka was the chance to see leopards. We were not disappointed. We had three good leopard sightings, as well as a sloth bear and numerous other less elusive animals.
We will carry the warmth of the Sri Lankan people with us for a long time.” —Devon Davies
