UNESCO World Heritage status has been granted to more than 1,200 landmarks across the world. It protects famous treasures like the Colosseum and the Taj Mahal. But arguably its more potent power is in preserving lesser-known sites. Such locales can’t count on name recognition alone to defend against poorly planned development. They also receive a fraction of the visitors you’ll find at their more famous counterparts.
