Make Your Next Trip Extraordinary

We had a wonderful adventure in Portugal designed by Joana and her team. Our trip began in Lisbon, making stops at medieval villages as we made our way to the Douro Valley, and then ending in Porto. Joana and her team patiently worked with me to craft a custom itinerary that blended special time together for all four of us (parents, daughter and son-in-law) and time apart to explore different interests and free time over 10 days. They provided terrific guidance to provide authentic experiences and extensive coordination and detailed planning. Restaurant reservations were taken care of, and both land and boat tour guides and drivers were the very best. They all catered to our interests and were flexible in creating experiences that we will always remember. The hotels Joana selected were beautiful, had large rooms, and most importantly were in great locations. They provided a wonderfully detailed itinerary prior to departure and made the trip seamless and stress-free so I could enjoy every moment with my family.

Joana and her team were always accessible through the planning process and during the trip. They checked in with us regularly and provided thoughtful surprises in our hotels. We communicated easily through WhatsApp and any questions were promptly addressed and updates easily received. I would highly recommend working with Joana and her team for a memorable journey through Portugal.

Overall: Lisbon (April 24-28, 2026), Douro Valley (April 28-May 2), and Porto (May 2-4) were outstanding. From the very first interaction, the planners handled every detail seamlessly. We highly recommend working with Joana, Ana, and their team.

Lisbon
Our stay at Palácio Ludovice Wine Experience Hotel was a highlight—full of character, historically rich, architecture theme (which Martha loved—my wife and interior designer), and perfectly located. Service was flawless, breakfast excellent, and the wine-cellar-style gym was a fun touch (though it could use more free weights).

What worked especially well:
Private historical tour and guide—private tram ride was a standout
Fado performance at Reservatório da Patriarcal underground waterworks—truly memorable
Pica-Pau Restaurant—probably our favorite overall meal for both food and warmth of service
Wandering the Chiado—great mix of local designers and global brands (the Zara stop didn’t hurt)
Pavilhão Chinês bar—we had never seen anything like it. Loved it.
Boat ride on the Tagus River—and the fun and helpful crew
We also appreciated how welcoming and approachable people were everywhere, with excellent English.

Less successful:
LX Factory felt overly touristy and not very authentic
Jerónimos Monastery was simply too crowded to access
A great transition from the Monastery, however, was the Maritime Museum—we loved the deep dive into Portugal’s 15th–16th century exploration history.

Also worth repeating: Solar dos Presuntos was the only real miss—food not so good and a noticeably unwelcoming front-of-house experience (staff and manager).
Bottom line: Lisbon was exceptional.

Douro Valley
We drove straight to the Douro (skipping Coimbra because we wanted to get to the Six Senses at a reasonable hour) and stayed at Six Senses Douro Valley. The setting is spectacular—hard to overstate how beautiful it is.
We took advantage of the full experience: Wine tastings, amazing spa, gym, hikes through the property, including the vineyards
Outdoor pool, live music happy hour
Excellent breakfasts and several strong meals onsite
The visit to Quinta do Crasto was a standout—the wine tasting and lunch were exceptional. The views of the vineyards along both sides of the River were fabulous. The meal there was arguably our favorite of the entire trip, including the excellent bacalhau.

Other highlights:
Cozinha da Clara at Quinta de la Rosa excellent across the board
Douro River cruise—relaxed and scenic
Van drivers—consistently excellent
One note: the Six Senses property is beginning to feel a bit dated and could benefit from a refresh.

Porto
We spent two unstructured days in Porto, which worked perfectly. We explored on foot—hills, alleys, bridges, and across to Vila Nova de Gaia. University students were everywhere for the Queima das Fitas, which was a fun experience for us. We loved the visit to the Museu do Carro Elecrico. We went on Saturday afternoon, they were having a special exhibit and parade of all of their street cars. Afterwards, a singing and instrument music group of elderly people played in front of the museum, and it was fantastic.

Consistent themes: great food, striking scenery above and along the river, beautiful street architecture, and genuinely warm people.
We visited Livraria Lello (a reported inspiration for Hogwarts scenery—specifically Flourish and Blotts and the grand staircases)—very interesting, though crowded. If feasible, offering clients private/off-hours access would be a meaningful upgrade.

Summary
We would rate both Portugal as a destination and the planning team’s service at the highest level. You helped us create a trip that felt both seamless and memorable. Thank you!

I am delighted to recommend Joana and her colleague Ana, whom I found through the Wendy Perrin WOW List when planning our recent trip to Portugal.

Joana spent many hours with me crafting a customized itinerary that took us from Porto through the Douro Valley, into the historic medieval villages of the interior, and finally to Lisbon. The planning took into account a special interest of ours, was meticulous and thoughtful. This trip was originally planned for October 2025 and had to be rescheduled to March 2026 due to some health issues. Joana and her team were completely accommodating and understanding about the rescheduling, happily starting where we left off when we finalized a new date months later. They were open and responsive to our suggestions of other hotels and restaurants.

What truly set them apart was both their attention to detail in the planning process and their attentiveness throughout the trip. They checked in on us regularly, were instantly available when we needed to adjust dinner reservations, and responded to every question via WhatsApp without missing a beat. We also had lovely surprises in every hotel, from food to little gifts representative of Portugal’s food specialties and native crafts, a warm and unexpected touch.

Every local guide they arranged was exceptional. True professionals who brought each destination to life and were eager to share their country with us. Joana arranged a fabulous private cooking class, a private hike along a spectacular coastline, bike rides and other wonderful experiences. The only activity I would not recommend is the bike ride in Porto, which was along a highway, although the view of the water was beautiful.

If you are planning a trip to Portugal or Spain, I would strongly encourage you to work with Joana and her team. You will be in the very best hands.

We were referred to Joana by Brook, as Joana is currently being tested for the WOW List & my budget was more limited for this trip than prior ones. My initial meeting with Joana was excellent, and she was not shy about coaching me on the pros and cons of some of the items I was thinking of. We were able to lock down the general trip pretty quickly, and I was happy with the plan, and subsequent bookings. The communication dropped off a bit in September, and I panicked when I hadn’t heard from them as they were to send the invoice for the 2nd payment & there had been no communication. I was on a different trip and had to send a few emails, which was a distraction. Found out that Joana had a family emergency, and then her team picked up on the communication. After that, everything was perfect.

We loved the hotels that were chosen—I wanted to stay longer in each and every one. And I would happily return! Our guides and drivers were great, and Joana organized a nice balance of touring time with personal downtime, which I had requested. We especially enjoyed our day in the Douro, with a tour and lunch at Quinta de la Rosa and private boat for our River Cruise. Also, our dinner at Taberna Tipica Quarta-Fiera in Evora. Great experience.

From the day that we landed in Portugal, the communication was excellent. Just the right amount of “checking in to see if everything was OK” on Joana & Ana’s part. We felt looked after. Our trip went smoothly in every way. The one thing that I had to contact them about was resolved as best possible by Joana (really, just a communication issue between the car rental agency and me).

On arrival home, I did share my overall thoughts with Joana, along with one experience that was a disappointment. She was so receptive to our feedback, and was going to check in with the provider to find out what happened as she has had very positive feedback in the past (which is why I am not mentioning the particular provider). I valued the attention she gave it, and she did go over and above by refunding us the costs of that one experience. I really appreciated the gesture.
