Travelers Anne and John McCroskey biked Puglia’s country roads past olive groves and the region’s iconic trulli houses.
Hi! My husband and I had a wonderful trip to the Puglia region of Southern Italy May 10-26th. Antonello planned our trip and Valeria was our lead contact. They did a fantastic job. Valeria always responded to our emails and questions promptly and thoroughly. My husband and I love being active on our trips, and they did a great job listening to us and getting to know what we like (and don’t like), tailoring a great trip. We loved all our hotels and their locations were great.
Our trip experiences:
-We did an e-bike excursion, “Puglia on Wheels,” with a burrata experience that was super fun. Gaetano was a magnificent guide and host, very flexible and patient (we usually don’t do “guided” bike rides but this was well worth it). Not only did we ride to the burrata cheese farm but we went to Alberobello, the town known for its unique Trullis and we also stopped at Locorotondo, a beautiful little village perched up on a hill…so fun exploring its tiny streets and shops. This was one of our favorite days!
We rented bikes for our next two destinations as well, and they transported them to our hotels where they were waiting for us ready to go…so nice! Gaetano also mapped out some great “self-guided” rides for us to do on our own out of Lecce and Minervino which were wonderful.
-We had an Olive Oil experience at Masseria Salamina that was lovely, interesting and fun. Our host/guide was the actual owner which was cool.
-Our guided tour of Matera was very informative and made our visit to this unique city more meaningful and interesting.
-Probably our favorite experience was the “Culinary journey/Baby DiCecca. It wasn’t crowded that day and we got some personal attention from the owner Vito and his girlfriend, Roberta. All the food and wine were amazing. Apparently Stanley Tucci visited here when making his show about food in Italy.
-Sadly both of our “water” excursions had to be cancelled because of high wind (boat tour to sea caves out of Polignano a Mare and a kayaking/snorkeling afternoon). The water was really cold so I don’t think we would have snorkeled anyway. I guess Puglia is a windier region.
One other thing that Valeria did for us that was very helpful (and unexpected) was that she gave us parking suggestions in all the towns we visited. Many of the towns can be tricky to park in and these suggestions made things so much easier!
We would recommend Antonello’s team to anyone wanting to visit Puglia!

Sept 20-Oct 3 2025. Puglia
We just came back from two weeks in Puglia. It was an amazing, unforgettable trip. Huge thanks to Valeria and her stellar team of guides, experts and drivers. Valeria was personable, professional, and very responsive. We were also very lucky to have perfect weather and relatively small crowds. I did not know much about the area before planning the trip with Valeria and she gave us some great ideas for places and experiences.
Some of our favorites: Gallipoli and the wonderful staff at the very lovely Palazzo Presta; our amazing leisurely lunch at Bepi’s masseria; the talented women at the Le Constantine textile factory (where we bought stunning handmade totes); and our delightful visit and lunch with Isabella of Radice Nomade, where we made our own necklaces (with plenty of help!) in their home/workshop. Also, we loved our two street food tours with our very knowledgeable guides (Andrea and Angela in Lecce and Giorgio in Bari)—everything was delicious! And we learned a lot!
Tips:
– We were originally suggested rooms in masserias outside of the historic centers. We much preferred staying in the center so that, after any tour or experience, we could come back to the hotel to relax or change and then easily walk to shops and restaurants. Our town center hotels were great!
– Maximize the experiences! They were the best part.
– One of the main drivers for coming to Puglia was to see the Trulli houses. Ironically, while we were glad to see them, Alberobello was a bit disappointing. Very crowded and “Disney.” We only spent about an hour there and that was enough.
– The planning and timing suggested by our planners was almost perfect. When looking at the schedule, we sometimes thought that there wasn’t enough time in this place or that place… but it turned out it was! The only tweaks we would make is we could have skipped Martina Franca and spent more time (to wander, shop) in Locorotondo (which was adorable!) and more time in Lecce. But, other than that, was pretty much perfect. We had enough scheduled tours, experiences and enough down time.
All in all, a great trip! Thanks to Wendy and the WOW team for excellent curation, as always.
Valeria was a joy to work with in planning our September 2025 trip to Puglia in Italy. The eight of us stayed at Casa Badra in Martina Franca, a beautifully refurbished farmhouse with traditional Trulli roof, an outdoor dining space surrounded by olive and fig trees, a pool, and villa cats that greeted us every morning. Each day our prompt and patient driver Francesco took us to different excursions around the region, anywhere from a 30-90 minute drive. We had guided walking tours of Ostuni and Lecce, swam in the glorious Ionian coastline at the Fatamorgana beach club, and enjoyed a boat tour of Polignano a Mare, where we were also able to jump in and swim. Valeria was able to incorporate all of our ideas about the trip and included an e-biking tour through Alberobello, hiking in a forest, and time in Taranto, the city where one of our friend’s great-grandfathers emigrated from.
And of course there was the food! We had many memorable experiences, including cheese making, sipping caffe alla leccese, enjoying platters of delicate Taranto mussels, and lunching in an olive oil estate surrounded by 1000- year-old trees. Perhaps our two most favorite experiences were an outdoor dinner in a vineyard during the lunar eclipse (!) and a pasta-making lesson and home-cooked meal at our villa.
Many of our friends ask where Puglia is in Italy, and certainly the area is not as crowded with tourists as in Rome and Venice. The weather in early September was in the 80s but the unfiltered Italian sun made it feel quite a bit hotter, especially during the walking tours. The ocean water temps were delightful, and the evenings were perfect for al fresco dining. Our trip was a great mix of relaxation, learning, and adventure. We highly recommend Valeria and her team to anyone considering a trip to Puglia!
My partner and I, with another couple, traveled in Puglia, Italy from June 11-24, 2025. Our trip planner was Antonello’s colleague Elisa. We had a wonderful trip. The accommodations in Puglia are quite unique, very reflective of local history and culture. The food was magnificent, and the transportation between events was comfortable and seamless. The local guides were personable and well informed. Silvia, in particular, was outstanding. We really enjoyed the sampling of local street food, boating along the Adriatic coast, the winery tour, cheese and olive oil tasting, and lunch, which included the famous Altamura bread. A special treat was a private catered lunch in an 11th-century cave church in Matera. Our trip planner, Elisa, was conscientious, available, and helpful throughout our trip. We enjoyed meeting her there in person.
There were few disappointments. On day 5 we did not get breakfast on the boat, spent no time in Otranto, and our driver returned us early to our hotel. Our Trulli resort was wonderful, but very isolated, and we were told that it would be very expensive to get transportation to eat elsewhere. Finally, I was disappointed that there was no time to shop for ceramics in Grottaglie, the ceramics capital of Puglia. Overall, however, this trip was a very memorable adventure.
