Trip to Normandy/Paris/Aix En Provence August 28 – Sept 11

This was the first two weeks of a three-month trip that included France, Spain and Portugal. The duration of the trip was quite unusual for my husband and myself. Since we couldn’t be in our home in Pacific Palisades due to the January fires, we thought we would make the most of this situation by traveling abroad for an extended time.

We already had plans stay with friends in the country outside of Aix, so we wanted to embellish our visit to France with time in Normandy and Paris.

We had been to Normandy before but as a history lover, this time I wanted to take a deep dive into the history of the area and the logistics of WWII.

On the recommendation of Wendy Perrin, we decided to go with our planning team.

Marissa and Charlotte were competent planners and very responsive. They were great to work with and put together a trip to Normandy rich in experience with excellent guides. Each guide had different strengths. One in particular, Jenny, was engaged in interviewing WWII veterans. Due to her specific expertise, she was able to identify that my father had served in Normandy around D-Day from paperwork I had brought with me. THAT was an emotional and extraordinary moment. She also provided information on how I could further research on which beach he had arrived and what role he played while there.

The Caen Museum was amazing, providing just the ‘deep dive’ I was looking for.

We were on our own in Paris, having been there multiple times. The ‘new’ Notre Dame is a knockout, and the Dior Museum is an explosion of creativity.

Our two weeks planned and executed by Phillip’s company all went without a hitch. Our itinerary was on an app and any changes or updates were relayed there and through WhatsApp. I know that some guides and services changed last minute due to unforeseen circumstances, but my planner was always able to find replacements. All the guides from Burgundy to Monaco were excellent. Our hotels were 5 star. It was a well-conceived itinerary.

We really enjoyed our recent trip to Provence and the French Riviera October 6-13, 2025. We especially enjoyed the private tour inside the top of the Roman aqueduct at Pont du Gard and the tour of the wonderful food market in Nice.

The planning process went very smoothly despite a staff turnover three months after we started planning the trip. Our trip advisors were very responsive to questions and changes we wanted to make. The guides and drivers organized were all excellent, especially Cedric in Saint Remy de Provence.

There are, however, several areas in which the company could improve their service. We had told them that we are in our late 70s and, while in good shape, we were not prepared for walking tours that began at 9am and ended at 5pm with only a couple of 30-minute car rides in between and an hour for lunch. Moreover, we were a bit surprised at the amount of up and down walking in Provence, especially on steep stairs.

The recommended Hotel de Tourrel in Saint Remy was very good and very well located. However, the recommended Hotel du Couvent in Nice was not at all what we expected, and the room in the old convent was hardly of five-star quality. More importantly, while the Old Town location was convenient, the inability of our driver and some taxis to drive up to the hotel was a real inconvenience because of the barriers to non-resident traffic. While the hotel provided a golf cart to transport us up to the hotel from the pick-up spot at the edge of Old Town, we had to wait substantial time for the cart on several occasions while blocking traffic, despite calling ahead to notify them of the time of our arrival.

Regarding restaurants, the staff seems to rely upon client feedback, but did not always visit themselves. Two of the restaurants in Saint Remy de Provence on the “updated” recommended restaurant list were permanently closed when I checked them out on the Internet.

On the other hand, Cedric, our guide in Provence, was outstanding and proactively rearranged the order of some of our tours to reduce driving and had very good recommendations for restaurants for lunch. He said that he usually reviews the logistics of itineraries, but was too busy this summer to do so in our case. He was delightful and very knowledgeable on a wide range of history and topics.

Wendy weighs in:

We’re grateful to Christopher for his detailed feedback, and we’d like to add a little more detail that we think is important for travelers to know. Christopher started the trip-planning process with Philip more than a year in advance. Back then, there was turnover in Philip’s office that was causing communication issues. As of mid-2025, those communication issues no longer exist because Philip assigned his deputy, Charlotte, to manage every WOW trip. The feedback from our travelers is that Charlotte has made the whole process super-smooth.

As for the Hotel du Couvent in Nice, Philip says that he has sent many WOW List travelers there and everyone else has loved it. And regarding the restaurant list Christopher was using, Philip says that “that had been given to him a year earlier and hadn’t been updated yet.” We believe communication in Philip’s office is much improved, but if you should encounter any issues, please write to questions@wendyperrin.com asap so we can ensure you are taken care of.

Our trip to Provence was wonderful! The drivers were incredibly kind and knowledgeable. Staying in St. Remy was a fabulous recommendation. We were able to explore the Luberon region and go down to Cassis without changing hotels!!
